Experience the cold.
Icebath Haarlem
A breath, a choice, a moment that changes everything that follows.
About the ice bathThe cold asks nothing of you.
It only asks that you stay.
There is a moment in every ice bath, usually around the thirty-second mark, where the body's initial resistance gives way to something unexpected. The noise stops. The breath deepens. A steadiness arrives that, once you've felt it, is difficult to describe and impossible to forget.
At The Sur House, the ice bath is a private experience, set within the rhythm of our contrast therapy ritual alongside the sauna. You choose your depth. You choose your pace. The cold is consistent, but what you bring to it, and what you carry away, is entirely your own.
Inspired by the cold Pacific waters that meet Big Sur's coastline, our ice bath is not a challenge. It is an invitation.
What happens to your body?
The science of cold
300% Noradrenaline increaseCold immersion triggers one of the largest natural releases of noradrenaline the body can produce, a neurochemical closely tied to sustained focus, elevated mood, and a significant reduction in pain. The effect can persist for several hours after your session.
Inflammation & muscle sorenessRapid vasoconstriction in the cold reduces inflammation markers in the bloodstream and supports faster recovery from physical exertion. Athletes have long known this. The body, it turns out, already understands how to use the cold.
Resilience & stress tolerancePractised cold exposure trains the body's stress response, strengthening the nervous system's ability to regulate under pressure. Over time, regular ice bathing builds a measurable shift in how the body and mind respond to discomfort, in and beyond the water.
Step by stepInside the ritual
-
Begin in the warmth
The sauna is where the ritual opens. Heat loosens the muscles, elevates the heart rate, and prepares the body for contrast. Do not rush this. Let it work.
-
Step to the edge
Take a breath before you enter. Let it out slowly. The cold will arrive immediately, this is the moment to find your breath rather than fight it. Breathe in through the nose, long and controlled.
-
Stay. Breathe. Be still.
The cold will ask you to leave. Most guests find that after thirty seconds, the urgency eases. The body adjusts. Something quiet opens. You may not want to leave when the time comes.
-
Let the body return
Step out and allow the body to rewarm naturally, this is when much of the benefit occurs. Wrap in your robe. Drink your tea. Notice how you feel. Repeat when ready.

Ice bath in Haarlem
The Sur House offers private ice bath sessions as part of our contrast therapy ritual in Haarlem. Set within a calm, intimate space along the Burgwal canal, the experience is designed for those who are curious about cold immersion, whether for the first time or as a regular practice.
Our ice bath is always available in combination with private sauna access. Sessions run for 60 minutes, giving you time for two to four full rounds of heat, cold, and rest at your own pace.
What are the benefits of cold water immersion?Cold water immersion triggers a significant rise in noradrenaline and dopamine, boosting focus, mood, and recovery, while reducing inflammation through vasoconstriction. Combined with sauna heat in contrast therapy, the alternating effect creates a powerful stimulus for the cardiovascular and lymphatic systems. Over time, regular cold exposure builds greater resilience and adaptability in both body and mind.
You do not need to be an athlete, a wellness enthusiast, or someone who enjoys discomfort to benefit from cold immersion. Most guests at The Sur House arrive with uncertainty and leave with a different relationship to it. The ice bath is available as part of every private sauna session, with no obligation to stay longer than feels right. A minute is enough to begin.
If you have cardiovascular conditions, uncontrolled high blood pressure, or are pregnant, please consult your doctor before booking. We recommend all first-time guests pair the ice bath with the sauna, as the prior warmth significantly eases the body's initial response to cold.
Is an ice bath right for you?
Private cold immersion for couples and small groupsOur sessions accommodate 2 to 4 guests in a fully private setting. Shared cold immersion, stepping into the water together, breathing through it, emerging together, is a quietly powerful thing. Many guests describe it as one of the most connecting experiences they have had with another person. Sessions start from €75 for two people.
Frequently Asked Questions
-
For most healthy adults, yes ice bathing is safe and well-tolerated from the first session. The key is to approach it with breath rather than force. We recommend starting with 30 to 60 seconds and building up naturally. If you have a cardiovascular condition, uncontrolled high blood pressure, Raynaud's disease, or are pregnant, please check with your doctor before booking. Our sauna and ice bath are always used together, which makes the transition into the cold significantly easier on the body.
-
Our ice bath is maintained at approximately 12°C, cold enough to produce a strong physiological response, manageable enough to allow a mindful experience. For most guests, 1 to 3 minutes per round is optimal. First-time guests often find 30 to 90 seconds is enough to feel the full shift. There is no minimum or target to hit. The goal is presence, not endurance.
-
At The Sur House, the ice bath is always offered as part of the private sauna and ice bath session, the two are inseparable for a reason. Beginning in the warmth of the sauna prepares the body, eases muscle tension, and makes the cold significantly more accessible and more effective. Contrast therapy, heat followed by cold, produces a different and deeper physiological response than cold alone. We do not offer ice bath sessions without the sauna.
-
Get out. Always listen to your body, there is nothing to prove and no one watching. The benefits of cold immersion come from presence, not suffering. If you find the cold overwhelming in your first round, step out, warm up, and consider trying a shorter immersion in the next round. Most guests find the second round considerably easier than the first. The body adapts quickly.
-
Yes and it is one of our most popular combinations. The Sauna & Massage Ritual (from €150 for one person) begins with 30 minutes of private sauna and ice bath, before moving into a 60-minute restorative massage. The contrast therapy opens the body in a way that makes every massage technique that follows land more deeply. If you are visiting for recovery or want the most complete reset possible, this is the experience we recommend.
